Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that develops gradually and affects almost every system of the body. Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the most common types. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs in a small number of people and has little to do with lifestyle.

However, over 90% of all diabetic patients suffer from type 2 diabetes, which is mainly caused by an unhealthy and unbalanced lifestyle.

Diabetes is preventable and controllable through yoga

Two of the most common yet preventable causes of type 2 diabetes are

  • Lack of physical activity and
  • wrong eating habits

Over the years, the wrong lifestyle leads to increased insulin resistance, which eventually leads to type 2 diabetes (T2D). T2D is characterized by insulin resistance, high blood sugar levels, and high, bad cholesterol levels.

Poorly managed diabetes leads to numerous complications. Some of the most common complications of T2D are:

  • Neuropathy (damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves)
  • Disease of large and small blood vessels
  • increased risk of stroke and heart attack
  • non-healing ulcers
  • kidney diseases
  • retinopathy (disorders of the retina, including some that cause blindness) and many more

Diabetes leads to increased disease and a shorter lifespan

T2D can be prevented but not cured. Luckily, it’s manageable, as shown by various diabetes prevention studies. In fact, increased physical activity along with a correction in diet can help control diabetes quite well in its early stages. Even more interesting is that certain lifestyle changes often work better than medication, provided these lifestyle changes are initiated early. This is why some people are even able to partially stop diabetes with these measures.

The benefits of yoga for diabetes are also documented in medicine

Yoga can also help prevent and treat certain medical conditions. Yoga exercises improve physical flexibility and strength, while breathing exercises (pranayama) promote mental well-being. When practiced properly and under the supervision of an experienced teacher, yoga can help induce biochemical changes in the body, improve hormone levels, reduce stress, increase metabolic rate, and promote discipline, leading to better outcomes in diabetes.

Yoga can help overcome obesity and improve metabolism

Obesity is one of the main reasons for the increase in T2D, android obesity in particular, where the fat deposits are located on the trunk (abdomen), significantly increases the risk of diabetes. Additionally, certain ethnic groups such as South Asians can develop diabetes with a much lower BMI (Body Mass Index) compared to their European counterparts. Research shows that practicing yoga asanas regularly can have a positive impact on body weight, body measurements and postmeal blood sugar levels. In one of the studies [1], 30-60 year old participants were able to significantly improve their blood sugar levels just by practicing yoga for 40 days. Regular yoga led to a decrease in waist-to-hip ratio , changes in insulin levels, aimproved glucose utilization and fat redistribution to name a few. Studies suggest that yoga can be viewed as an adjunct to diabetes treatments.

Yoga stimulates metabolism and lowers cholesterol levels

People from non-medical backgrounds mistakenly think of diabetes as an isolated disorder of glucose metabolism. In diabetes, the metabolism of all nutrients changes . In addition to high blood sugar , every diabetic also suffers from disturbed fat metabolism (lipids). Yoga has a stimulating effect on metabolism, which helps lower cholesterol and has a positive impact on cardiovascular health.

Born into a Jain family where yoga has been the way of life for five generations, my formal yoga journey began at age of eight at a Vedic school in India. There I received a solid foundation in ancient scriptures, including Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Yoga Sutras (to name a few).

In 2009, I founded Arhanta Yoga Ashrams. I see yoga as a way to master the five senses, so I named our ashrams 'Arhanta Yoga,' the yoga to master the five senses!

In 2017, I also founded Arhanta Yoga Online Academy so that people who can not visit our ashrams can follow our courses remotely.
